Something new is happening every day in our society which influences our lives in some or the other way. People are always curious to know even the smallest thing taking place around. With age, we try to get acquainted with the world. This curiosity is satisfied by newspapers. Newspapers have gained a very important place in our life. It is the best and cheapest source to get information about the world. We start our day with newspapers. We get restless if the newspaper is not available even for a single day.

The first newspaper of India was Bengal Gazette which was published in 1780. The first Hindi newspaper, ‘Udand Martad’ was started by Mr. Jugal Kishor. With the spread of the freedom struggle, the newspaper industry progressed in India. Slowly they gained popularity and were distributed among more and more people. Today several newspapers in many different languages are published daily.

Good newspapers publish national and international current news. They also contain articles on different topics, short stories, editorials, etc. Articles related to trade, culture, social issues are also published. Views and opinions about different issues of national interest are given in newspapers. Thus, newspapers give us full information about society, country, and world. They help to improve our general knowledge. People read newspapers for different reasons. Some are more interested in news related to sports. Some like to read information about Bollywood and reviews of the latest movies. News related to employment is also published in newspapers, so they are good means for seeking jobs.

Newspapers carry a great responsibility and accountability in a democratic country like India. Personal freedom is the essence of democracy and it is reflected in the press media. Newspapers can be a good instrument to understand public opinion. The press can help in promoting communal harmony, national unity, and brotherhood. It can be of great help to remove social evils like dowry, untouchability, casteism, riots, etc. No other media can be as influential as newspapers. They keep the public informed about the policies, programs, and planning of the government.

However, it is expected that newspapers should never misuse their rights, privileges, and powers. They should never try to thrive on sensational and motivating news. They have to be impartial, fair, fearless, and responsive to public opinions.
