Many Indian women have worked hard to brighten India’s name in the world. They have made the country proud with their capabilities and tremendous enthusiasm. Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the one among them. The first woman Prime Minister of India was born on November 19, 1917, at Allahabad. She was the worthy daughter of a worthy father.

Indira Gandhi’s father was late Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and her mother’s name was Kamala. The family atmosphere had a great influence on her mind. She completed her primary education in Allahabad and Shantiniketan and the higher education at Oxford. She was married to Mr. Firoz Gandhi in 1942. She had two sons, Rajeev and Sanjay.

She joined politics at an early stage. She was a member and then President of the Indian National Congress for many years. After her father’s death, she became Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the cabinet of Lal Bahadur Shastri. She became the Prime Minister of India at the age of 48. She was in this position for almost seventeen years. During this period she took many important decisions which proved beneficial for the nation.

Under Indira Gandhi’s leadership, India defeated Pakistan in 1971. A new country- Bangladesh was born. She nationalized all the major banks. She also took proper steps to stop the terrorism in Punjab. She was a truly secular leader. Her domestic and international policies were a great success. She was a visionary. She was a determined and resolute leader.

Mrs. Gandhi was also a renowned world leader. She was the chairperson of NAM. She hosted the Commonwealth Meet in India. She also managed to organize the Asian Games in India in 1982. She worked hard to promote the issue of world peace.

This great leader was shot dead by her bodyguards on 31st October 1984, in her own house. It was the time when we needed her the most. She will be remembered by the generations to come for her sacrifice and honesty.
