Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India was born on 14th November 1889 in Allahabad. His father, Motilal Nehru was a renowned lawyer. His mother’s name was Swaruparani. He spent his childhood like a prince; full of happiness and joy. He completed his primary schooling at home itself. A British teacher was appointed to teach him. At the age of 15, he was sent to England to pursue his higher education. There he studied in the Hairo School. He completed his secondary schooling at Cambridge University. He returned to India in 1912 after becoming a barrister.
After coming back to India he started practicing in the Allahabad high court. He got married to Kamala Kaul in 1919. Nehru was practicing law along with his father. During that time, the struggle for India’s freedom was at its peak. Motilal had relations with most of the respected members of Congress. It was during this time that Nehru met Gandhiji. Soon after that, Nehru actively participated in the Non-Cooperation movement. As a result, he was sent to jail several times. He was given severe punishments there.
Nehru had presided over the Lahore session of the Congress held in 1930. Demand for complete independence was placed before the government. The freedom struggle was strong enough to make the British angry. After that, he participated actively in the Quit India Movement. In the end, the British decided to grant freedom to India in 1946. A hungami government was formed and Nehru was appointed as prime minister. India became free on the 15th of August 1947 and Nehru was sworn as the first Prime Minister of independent India. He remained on this post until his death.
Nehru could work 20 hours a day without a break. He was a man of a very influential character. Nehru is considered one of the most renowned leaders in the world. After independence, he initiated the Five Year Plan for the overall development of India. He eradicated the Zamindari system. He emphasized the production of electricity so as to accelerate the pace of agriculture and business.
Jawaharlal Nehru brought about radical changes in the education system too. That is the reason why he is known as the bhagyavidhata of the country. The country progressed rapidly during his rule. He secured a strong position for India on an international level too. He has played a vital role in solving some key global situations. So, he is also known as “Shantidoot.”
Pandit Nehru always had a smile on his face. He was very kind and generous. He was an eminent writer as well as a great statesman. He had a great love for children and he was lovingly known as Chacha Nehru by them. The Indian government has honored him with the “Bharat Ratna,” the highly admired civilian award.

Nehru was a great statesman, thinker and a writer as well. He wrote many books. Like his ideal, he too stood for nonviolence and worked hard to bring about a peaceful existence among his countrymen and the people of the world at large.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India and he held the office for the longest term. Mr. Nehru became the Prime Minister when India was still under the foreign rule. He also came in contact with Mahatma Gandhi and became his disciple. Under his direction as a Congress leader Nehru took part in the Non-co-operation Movement, Salt Styagraha and Quit India Movement. He was married to Kamla Nehru in 1916 and Indira was born to them in 1917. Kamla Nehru fell sick and Nehru took her to Switzerland for treatment in 1926. But she did not live long. This in a way forced Nehru to spend more time for the cause of the poor and the needy.
He was arrested many times and spent several years in British Jails. He was the President of the Indian National Congress for four terms. In 1946 he first headed the Interim Government. Pandit Nehru died on May 27, 1964.
