Essay On My Favourite Book Mahabharata

We take the help of different means to entertain ourselves. Everybody has some other hobby. I like reading books the most. Books give me tremendous enjoyment. It also improves my knowledge. Of all the books I have read, I like Mahabharata the most. It contains the life story of Pandavas and Kauravas. It was written by Maharshi Vyas. The original book is in Sanskrit; however, it has been translated into many languages.

Mahabharata consists of 1 lakh shlokas and eighteen Parva. The main story is related to the battle that was fought on Kurukshetra. This battle was fought between Pandavas and Kauravas for acquiring the kingdom of Hastinapur. Dhritarashtra and Pandu were the princes of the Hastinapur kingdom. Dhritarashtra was blind and so he could not become the king despite him being the elder brother. Pandu was crowned as the king. He had five sons namely, Yudhishthir, Bhima, Arjun, Nakul, and Sahedev. They were together known as Pandavas. Dhritarashtra had 100 sons, Duryodhan and Dushasan being the elder among them.

Yudhishthir was the eldest prince and so he was announced as the successor of Hastinapur kingdom. But Duryodhan was against this and he made several plans to kill Pandavas. But he could not succeed. Finally, he invited Yudhishthir for gambling. In this game, Prince Yudhishthir lost everything and was sent to twelve years of exile along with his brothers. On completion of this exile, the Pandavas demanded their empire but Duryodhan refused to return it. So a fierce battle was fought between Kauravas and Pandavas. The battle lasted for 18 days and Pandavas emerged victoriously.

Mahabharata is important because of many aspects. It gives a detailed description of politics, religion, education, friendship, enmity, the status of women in the society at that time, statesmanship. administration etc. Mahabharata is not the story of a particular person. It is the story of family members, their relationship, love, and hatred. It tells us that good conquers the bad and evil. The wicked people suffer at the end. The book sounds different every time you read it. Thus it is my favourite book.
