Pineapples were discovered by Europeans about 500 years ago. Pineapples do not ripen further after harvesting. They have to be stored in a cool place. Once they are cut, refrigeration is necessary and must be eaten within two or three days.

The flesh and juice of the pineapple are used in a wide variety of foods around the world. In many countries, pineapples are prepared and sold on roadsides. People eat them as a snack. It is sold completely or in halves with a stick inserted. Pieces of pineapple are used as fruit salad as well as toppings in different pizzas.

They are also used as a grilled ring on a burger. Crushed pineapple is used in jam, sweets, and ice cream. Children, as well as grown-ups, drink pineapple juice as a favorite beverage. Pineapples are found in a wide range of cuisines. Besides eating, in the Philippines, the leaves of pineapple are used to produce thread for textile.

The pineapple plant grows about 1 to 1.5 meters tall. The plant itself has a short, sturdy stem with tough leaves. When fruits are created, it usually produces up to 200 flowers. The colors of the flowers vary from lavender to light purple to red. Once it flowers, the individual fruit of the flowers joins together to create what we call a pineapple. It has 30 or more long, narrow, heavy, trough-shaped leaves with sharp spines. They are about 30 to 100 centimeters long and are surrounded by a thick stem.
