Tea is one of the famous beverages among people, especially among the aged. It is a drink acquired from the tender leaves of an evergreen tropical shrub. It is the dried leaves of the tea plant. It is a hot beverage made by pouring boiled water into the tea leaves. It may be drunk with milk or lemon and/ or by adding sugar. Tea is a plant on the hill slopes.
Tea is grown in China, Japan, India, and Sri Lanka. Teas are of two important types. They are Assam tea with broad leaves and Chinese tea with small leaves. The tea leaves are collected from the bushes three to four times a year. They are gathered after the tea plants are fully grown. The green leaves are dried in the sun. They are rolled and heated in iron vessels. Later they have dried again over charcoal fires.
A warm and moist climate is necessary for a tea plantation. This crop requires a temperature of more than 21Β°C and heavy rainfall. Tea requires large manual labor for preparing fields, weeding, manuring, picking of tender leaves, and processing. As tea plants cannot stand bad water near the roots, it is planted on hill slopes, where natural drainage is available. Rich soil is best for this crop.
China ranks first in terms of tea plantation area and production. After China, India ranks second in the production of tea. In India, tea plantations are located in Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala. In West Bengal, a tea plantation is found in Darjeeling. The third-largest producer of tea in the world is Kenya followed by Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, the tea plantation is located on the slopes of the Central Highlands. Japan is known for its green tea cultivation. It is the largest producer of green tea in the world. Some of the other major countries that produce tea are Argentina, Vietnam, Turkey, Iran, and Indonesia.
Drinking tea is healthy as well as harmful. It becomes harmful for our nerves if it is consumed often. Tea refreshes us and makes us mentally active. On small quantity tea is also cultivated in Thailand, Bangladesh, Uganda, Tanzania, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Nepal.
