Autobiography Of A Rupee

Hello! My name is Rupee. I leave in Kubera’s treasure. He is my master, my lord. People also call me Lakshmi. I have one form but different names, for example, Ruble, Pound, Yen, lira, Mark, Dollar, Dinar, Rupee, etc. People carry out their business through me only. They give me and satisfy their daily needs. Sometimes I travel long distances in a single day and sometimes I just lie alone in a bank or in a cupboard. I am the happiest in the temple.

In the olden days, my appearance was different. I was made either with gold or silver. My importance was less. But with time everything changed and people started honoring me. I got too much of importance. I became the center of attraction for the whole world. One’s lifestyle, thinking, clothes, eating habits, everything changed as I came to them. My presence removes all the evils.

The person whom I approach suddenly becomes royal, knowledgeable, and talented. The qualities like pride, jealousy, competition, anger, hatred go on increasing in a person who visits. Many times people adopt illegal means to earn me. Every person – rich or poor, small or big, man or woman- is involved in the race of winning me. They run like fools to grab me.

My presence makes a person feel comfortable. If I am not there even the relatives turn away. Murders and suicides are committed because of me. People even try to kill their beloved for me. I don’t know when I am going to get freedom from this slavery.

However, there are exceptions to every rule. It is not that everyone follows illegal practices to obtain me. Some people work very hard to obtain me and experience happiness. Some make my use for charity. They donate me to hospitals, schools, or use me for another kind of social service. I feel very happy during such occasions. So this is my story.
