Our life today has become very fast and busy. Due to this, we get tired both physically and mentally. We need some or the other kind of entertainment to relax our mind and body. We feel energetic when we are happy. Science has provided us with many means of entertainment. Cinema is one of them. Movies were invented by American scientist Thomas Alva Edison in 1984. Initially, movies used to be silent. Another Scientist Dadste introduced the technique of adding sound to the movies. Movies traveled to India from England via America.
The first Indian movie was made by Shri Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. The first silent movie of India was ‘Raja Harishchandra’. ‘Aalmara’ was the first talkie movie made in Mumbai. Today, India ranks second after Hollywood in the business of movie-making.
In the olden days, movies were black and white but now they are multi-colored. We can watch movies on TV also. Initially, movies were based on religious and cultural themes. Slowly the trend changed and now cinemas based on various social and economic issues made.
Movies can become a good means of mass education. The impact of visual media is tremendous. Any subject becomes easy to understand by viewing rather than just reading and listening. Movies can provide information about historical, geographical, medical, scientific, and agricultural issues. Short documentary films can be used to educate people. A majority of Indians are illiterate, so it is easier to give information about different issues through movies. For this films in local languages can be produced. Today, the techniques of making cinema have improved a lot. So it has become more impressive and mature.
However, movies do have certain ill effects. Watching movies constantly is dangerous for the eyes. The scenes of cruelty, violence, fighting and murders have an irreversible effect on the young generation. Children try to imitate these scenes in real life and this may lead to fatal accidents. Incidences of kidnapping, murder, ransom money are increasing in society. Movies are mostly responsible for this change. Government should initiate making movies which show good values and depict our culture as it definitely reflects good effects on the society.
