The needs of ancient men were limited. People were happy if they got food, shelter, and clothing. But with different kinds of developments and inventions, the needs have increased substantially. Somebody has rightly said that necessity is the mother of inventions. Television is the best example that confirms this fact.
Television was invented by a scientist named Besard of England in 1925. Surprisingly it has conquered the entire world in a span of 80 years. It has reached even the remotest villages today. The advantages of TV are many. Through TV we can watch events taking place even in distant places. We can see many miracles of science through the discovery Channel. We can get connected with the rest of the world through news channels.
TV has spread education to the masses. Underprivileged people can get the benefit of its educational programs. It gives us knowledge about different parts of the world, the traditions, and the culture through different programs. Even programs related to cooking are shown. By telecasting entertainment serials it has propagated the national language. We can see movies on TV. Our national channel Doordarshan shows live telecasts of the Independence Day and Republic day celebrations. It also telecast programs related to agriculture, wildlife, music, scientific inventions, yoga, etc. TV gives us information about the climatic conditions.
But every coin has two sides. TV has its own advantages as well as disadvantages. Children keep watching TV the whole day. They do not want to go out and play. This ultimately affects their health. Watching TV for a longer duration is harmful to our eyes. We do not take proper advantage of this invaluable medium. We spend our time watching pointless amusements instead of watching good educational or entertainment programs. We hardly see programs related to literature or culture.
Children try to imitate the advertisements and nasty scenes of the serials or pictures. Horror films or serials can produce feelings of insecurity among children. It has a bad effect on a child’s psychological development. It facilitates the spread of violence in society. So, it is up to us as to how to use this man-made marvel. When used with proper care, TV can be a boon otherwise it is a curse.
