Essay On What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood and most of the tissues in human body. It is an organic compound that exists either in a free state or as esters of fatty acid in almost all animal tissues. Cholesterol is also used by human body for the digestive system.

In 1812, cholesterol was discovered. Its name originates from the Greek word ‘cholestereos-oi’, meaning bile-solid’. The creation of this compound takes place in different tissues and organs especially, the brain, liver and arteries.

Increase of cholesterol in human body above a certain level can prove to be dangerous for one’s health. The free flow of the blood is obstructed when excessive fat and cholesterol are deposited in the walls of the arteries. This causes blockage of blood flow resulting into heart problems. The amount of blood flowing in the arteries decreases and as a result, the oxygen supply to important parts of our body decreases. Small blood clots passing through the blood vessels are trapped due to the higher amount of cholesterol deposits.

If arteries providing oxygen and caring blood to the heart are blocked, than that particular part of the heart stops its normal functioning. This immediately leads to major heart attack that can even prove fatal.

We can control the level of cholesterol in blood through proper diet. A high percentage of cholesterol is present in the foods of animal origin like meat, eggs, butter, cheese, etc. Foods containing more amount of cholesterol must be avoided. Fresh green vegetables, fruits and cereals must be the major part of our diet.

Several measures can be undertaken to maintain the desirable cholesterol level. With the help of regular exercise, control over consuming certain fatty foods and regular walking habit can help to reduce the risk of heart problems.
