Essay On World’s Sparrow Day

World’s Sparrow Day is a day that is observed in order to increase the awareness towards decreasing population of the House Sparrow and other common birds staying in urban environments. Since 2010, every year this day is observed on 20th March. The World’s Sparrow Day has become very popular. It is celebrated in more than 40 countries across the globe, especially in Europe and parts of South Asia. It is introduced by the Nature Forever Society of India in partnership with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France. Several other national and international organisations across the world have joint them.

An Indian conservationist Mohammed Dilawar started The Nature Forever Society. His work of helping the House Sparrow in Nashik is appreciable. He was named as one of the “Heroes of the Environment” for 2008.

The idea of observing a World’s Sparrow Day came up during a discussion at the Nature Forever Society’s office. The idea was to keep a day for the House Sparrow to convey the message of protecting their and the natural environment of other common birds. This day also marks a day to celebrate and appreciate the beauty of the common biodiversity, which is not taken seriously.

The first World’s Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010 in different parts of the world. The day was celebrated by carrying out various kinds of activities and events like sparrow processions, art competitions, awareness campaigns, as well as interactions with media.

World’s Sparrow Day also has a broader vision to provide a stage where people who are working on the conservation of the House Sparrow and other common birds can link, work together and share ideas. This leads to improved results. It aims to provide a meeting place for people from different parts of the world to come together and form a force that can play an important role in support and spreading the awareness of conserving species of lower conservation status.

To encourage the efforts made towards this cause, Nature Forever Society of India instituted the first Sparrow Awards in Ahmedabad in 2011. In 2013, one of the important partners who had joined Nature For Ever Society of India (NES) and supported Sparrow Awards was Sustainuance magazine. The Editor of the magazine organized the event and handed out the award to the winners. Jag Mohan Garg, N. Shehzad, M. Saud, Jal Grahan Kameti and Piplantri were the winners of Sparrow Awards 2014.
