For more than 500 years, works of William Shakespeare has inspired the minds of people all over the world. He was a great English poet, actor and a playwright. He is regarded as the greatest writer in the world of English literature. His works included about 38 plays, 154 verses and 2 long narrative poems. He also wrote several other poems. His plays are translated into every important language and are performed by various artists.

His parents’ names were John and Mary. In April 1564, William was born at Stratford, on the banks of river Avon in Warwickshire. He attained Stratford King’s New School as well as the grammar school. The success of his works was due to his vast knowledge over grammar. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway.

Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor and writer. His first work was a long poem titled Venus and Adonis’. He also became the co-owner of a play company called the ‘Lord of Chamberlain’s Men’.William produced most of his works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and historical types. Some of his important plays are ‘As you like it’, ‘The merry wife of Windsor’, ‘The comedy of errors’, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, ‘The merchant of Venice’, ‘All’s well that ends well, “The Tempest’, ‘The three parts of Henry the VI, “The life and death of King John’, ‘The life of King Henry the V’, ‘The life of King Henry the VIII”, “The life and death of Richard the II’, etc.

Several interesting characters were created by him in his plays. He also wrote tragedies that included ‘King Lear’, ‘Hamlet’, ‘The Elizabethan view of tragedy’, ‘The life and death of Julius Caesar’, ‘Antony and Cleopatra’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Othello’, ‘The Dionysian Greek’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’. However, Hamlet is considered as his most outstanding work. One can say that English literature is incomplete without his creative writings.

During the last stages of his carrier, he wrote tragi-comedies. In 1623, two of his friends published the First Folio. It is a collected edition of Shakespeare’s dramatic works. It includes all the plays of this great poet and playwright.

The genius of this great man did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. In the 20th century, his work was studied and performed by new scholars and performers. His plays are highly popular today and are studied, understood and performed in various cultures throughout the world.
