Drug abuse is the greatest problem of today. Drugs give momentary enjoyment but eat away slowly the most vital parts of our body. Drug abuse is an international problem and should be controlled by all means. Drugs are smuggled into India through the border areas of Nepal and Pakistan. The youth who are supposed to be the future pillars of the nation are addicted to drugs.

The main drug racketeers and drug peddlars distribute the drugs to the teenagers free of cost through some road-side stalls or through small ice-cream shops. Once an individual has tasted the drug for the first time, he becomes an addict and cannot live without it. He then must have drugs and to get them he is ready to do anything. At this stage the drugs are sold to him at the higher price.

LSD, Ganja, Brown Sugar, Crude Molasses, Cocaine are some of the narcotic drugs. CRACK is the most common drug which can be easily prepared. With every puff of smack, one inhales a deadly combination of poisonous chemicals. Drugs can cause heart attack, high blood pressure, hardening of arteries and cancer.

Those who start taking drugs are either unemployed or frustrated due to some social or family problem.

Anti Narcotics Squad (ANS) and International Drugs Enforcement Agency (IDEA) have been set up to eradicate this abuse. But the police and other agencies are corrupted by the drug racketeers and even the top officials and politicians seem to be hand in glove with them. The result is that more and more youth are joining the group of drug-takers.

To eradicate this abuse, the drug peddlars and the racketeers must be punished. Strict measures to control the sale of drugs in open as well as at secret places should be taken. Moral education should be introduced as one of the subjects in schools and colleges and guidance and counselling centers should be opened.

Drug abuse is rife in many dollars are spent internationally preventing drug use, treating addicts, and fighting drug-related crime. Although drugs threaten many societies, their effects can also be combated successfully. This essay looks at some of the effects of drug use on society, and suggests some solutions to the problem.

They neglect or abuse their families, and eventually require expensive treatment or hospitalization.

The second effect is on crime. Huge police resources are needed to fight smuggling and dealing. Criminal gangs and mafia underworlds develop with the money from drugs.

However, the menace of drugs can be fought. Education is the first battle. Children need to be told at home and in school about drugs. People need to be aware of the effects so that they can avoid this problem

A second approach is to increase police manpower and create effective laws to stop dealers. However the main target should be the user: Families and counselors need to talk to children and people at risk. Parents need to look at their children and help them to become responsible. Worthwhile jobs and housing are also needed to give people a role in society.

In conclusion, although the problem of drugs may seem impossible to eliminate, there are concrete steps that can be taken to weaken the hold of drugs on society. The danger from drugs is too great to ignore for us and our children.
