Every person is ambitious. It is good to be ambitious but many of us cannot achieve what we dream of. It needs immense hard work, determination, and sincerity to achieve our goal. The first Indian astronaut, Kalpana Chawla was one such person, who fulfilled her dream through her endless efforts and willpower.

Kalpana was born in the Karnal district in Haryana. She belonged to a middle-class family. She completed her primary education in Tagore Balniketan of Karnal. She completed her higher education in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College. She then went to Texas University to pursue her post-graduation.

She joined NASA after completing her Ph.D. from Colorado University. In 1997 NASA selected her for its mission on the basis of her capabilities and hard work. She traveled to outer space for the first time in 1997. She stayed in space for 400 hours. She traveled 65 lakh kilometers during this period. She traveled to space twice and stayed there for a total of 760 hours.

She was on her second space mission in 2003. The aim of this mission was to discover drugs for various incurable diseases. There were six crew members with Kalpana. The astronauts performed 80 different experiments in space. They successfully completed their mission but while returning back to earth, they met with a severe accident, and space shuttle Columbia disintegrated in space on February 1, 2003. The accident took place in Texas in the USA.

Kalpana proved that with hard work one can achieve anything in life. Kalpana was a simple, easily approachable, and down-to-earth person. She always used to help others. She was capable and very sincere. The Indian Government has honored her by giving her name to one of our satellites. Her inspiring life ended in shattering tragedy. But her indomitable spirit will speak to us forever.

Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian-American astronaut. She became the first Indian woman to enter space. Kalpana was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, a small town in Haryana. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist. In 2003, she was one of the seven crew members who were killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

She got her primary education in a local school where she was just an average student. She had a great fascination for airplanes from her childhood. She wanted to fly in the open sky like a bird. Therefore, she joined Punjab Engineering College to study aerospace engineering. With hard work and dedication, she got top rank. Later she went to the USA for further studies.

Kalpana was a genius. She wanted to achieve more and more. She joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration popularly known as NASA. She was selected by NASA to be an astronaut in 1994. By March 1995, she reported to the Johnson Space Center as a candidate in the 151th Group of Astronauts. Her path to the stars was full of extremely complex technical needs. However, this did not dishearten her.

Her big moment arrived in 1997 when she made her first space mission with the Space Shuttle flight STS-87. It was a 16-day research mission. During the mission, she studied the Sun’s outer atmospheric layers. This was not the end of her life’s mission. She desired to carry out many more missions.

It was again a proud moment for her when she was assigned to the crew of STS-107 in January 2003. The US space shuttle Columbia lifted Kalpana and her six-crew members on January 16, 2003. In the beginning, everything was all right. Columbia’s crew completed more than 80 scientific research experiments. They were very happy, as they had achieved their goal. Now it was the time to return to Earth.

On 1st February 2003, after 16 days, Columbia was returning to Earth. At a height of 207,000 feet over Texas, USA it lost contact and exploded. All seven astronauts were killed. The Space Shuttle disintegrated into pieces. The disaster took place during the re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Kalpana Chawla was such a heroic character who always wanted to do something adventurous. Her life itself was a great adventure. She had a great love for her motherland. She never forgot her native place and her country. With her strong willpower and achievements, she rose to such a height. We all are proud of her.
