Students have no worries and cares about earning their livelihood and they have unlimited vigour and vitality. So they can be of great help in the field of social service. Almost eighty per cent of the population of India lives in rural areas. Most of the people living in villages are illiterate. They are the victims of many social evils. Students can do a great deal to improve the lot of the villagers.

During their vacation, students should go to the villages and serve the villagers. Students can also provide help to many other social organisations which are active in villages and provide different types of services to the
people living in rural areas. They can help the sufferers of an epidemic or help in the famine-stricken area.

Students can also do something for the defence of their country. They can get training in first aid, fire fighting, air raid precautions, use of rifles, nursing etc. It has been found that students today are not interested in social work. They lead a dull, cheerless and irresponsible life. They idle away most of their time in going to cinemas. This is very deplorable. Such activities do not provide inner joy to individuals. On the contrary, students waste their money and precious time in these useless pursuits. Social service done with selfless efforts provides a great inner joy and keeps an individual happy, mentally as well as emotionally.

Students are the future citizens of the country and have different roles to play. Like others, students have also their duties towards the society. Social service can be, and should be done by all, but students are especially useful for social service.

Though they should devote a greater part of their time in attending to their studies, they should spend a portion of their time in the service of the people Most of the time of a student is wasted in idle gossip, in roaming and in fruitless work. It is better to utilize the power of youth in socially productive work. If a student utilizes his time fruitfully and in socially useful work he gets contentment. Students should remember that they are born for the improvement of the society. They can help the mankind in the best possible way.

The value of social service should be taught to students to create inspiration in them. Students can provide social services in many ways. Firstly, Students can play the educational role in very successful manner. They can teach illiterate people in villages and towns whenever they have free time.. They may provide service to the members of the society in their time of need. Secondly, students can have discussions with common people everywhere on our social and political duties. We know that the putting garbage at proper places on roads and keeping the streets clean are very important. Students can tell the people how to do it. They can take part in cleaning and mending themselves.

Thirdly, students can work within social service organizations like Jaago Foundation, Red crescent etc. to provide help and guidance to the suffering humanity. They can utilize their time in assist helpless, poor and ill people in reaching hospitals. They can take out people from flood and earthquake.

Students get long vacation. It is criminal to let them go waste. Students from vital areas can help the villagers in agriculture. They can turn the fallow lands into smiling fields with their own hands. Students can demonstrate to the villagers the scientific methods of agriculture. They can teach them how to collect village refuse and turn it into manure which doubles the yield of crops per acre. They. can impress the villagers that to burn cow dung is to burn gold. It is the students who can do immense social service in the Community Projects and National Extension Services. They can brings about a revolution in the villagers and completely change the face of the country.

Illiteracy is rampant in India. It prevails in every nook and corner. Students owe a debt to society. It is their duty to impart education to their illiterate brethren. They must give in the same measure as they have received and are still receiving. The villagers cannot exercise their right to vote intelligently and correctly if they cannot read a book or a newspaper. The students can do a lot in this respect and they must not shirk off their responsibility.

True social service lies in learning the dignity of labour, learning to do things with our own hands. Students must serve the masses as a matter of national duty and as a labour of love. It would be in the interest of the country if social service is made compulsory for the award of a University degree.

To sum up, every one must work hard to raise India. More work falls to the share of the students as they are more energetic than others. Students must have a burning desire to serve India. They must not expect any reward in return. A good action is its own reward.
