Peacock is one of the most beautiful but vigilant and intelligent birds. The Indian Government announced it as our National Bird in the month of January 1963. It’s a symbol of beauty, dignity, and majesty. Many poets and writers, including Kavi Kalidas, have written many verses and stories that reveal this truth.

A peacock’s dance is one of the amazing sights one can never behold. It spreads its exotic feathers of green, blue, and many other shades while dancing and it is a delight to see it. What attracts one is its multi-colored tail and feathers. Its neck and breast are blue in color. So it is also called ‘Neelkanth’. A female bird is called a peahen. Peacocks are usually found in flocks and are very shy by nature. When it rains, a peacock is very happy and starts dancing.

The peacock is a large bird with long and ugly legs. Its diet consists of grain, worms, snakes, tomatoes, guava, banana, red and green chilies, and buds. It can fly short distances. Its legs are very long, thin but strong with which it can run very fast. This protects it from its enemies.

Peacock feathers are very much in demand for making decorative articles. Children like to keep them in their notebooks, They are also used in making small handy fans.
