Essay On A Cold Wave in the City

In the last week of January we had a cold wave in the city. It lasted for almost a week.

During the cold wave, icy winds blew all the time. People shivered even with their warm coats on. Most people preferred to remain indoors. They wanted to keep warm. The streets were crowded only during working hours. Soon after work, people rushed back to their houses to keep warm.

The streets looked deserted after sunset. Cinema houses, and restaurants suffered a big loss. Few people could brave the cold to go out for entertainments. The rich people did not suffer much. They had plenty of woollen garments to keep them warm. They went out warmly clad. It was the poor that suffered most, for they had nothing to keep them warm. Stray dogs and animals tried to take shelter in the porches of buildings.

Those who suffered the most were homeless people. They had no protection against the cold. They collected waste paper and old rags and tried to make small fires to warm themselves. They sat huddled around these fires trying to beat the cold. It was a pitiful sight. Many of those who were exposed to the cold died during the cold wave. The victims were mostly poor people and beggars.

Thus the cold caused suffering to everyone but most of all were the poor and homeless.
