After more than 200 years, India won its freedom from British rule. After a very long struggle, India got independence on 15th August 1947. This day is the most important day for the entire nation as it is celebrated as Independence Day. India got its independence after long efforts of freedom lovers like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Dadabhai Navroji, Firozshahw Mehta, Chandrasekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, and many more.

After getting freedom, Nehru opened up the India flag at Red Fort in Delhi. Every year, a grand function is organized at the Red Fort. Just like Republic Day, Independence Day is celebrated throughout the country with great pride and pleasure. As Independence Day is a national festival, a public holiday is observed throughout the country. Each state capital celebrates Independence Day with excitement and pride. Here the Chief Minister or the Governor unfurls the National Flag.

A wonderful celebration is organized, which is broadcasted on television. The Prime Minister hoists the tricolor National Flag at Red Fort in Delhi and National Anthem is sung. 21 gun salutes are given to the National Flag and the Prime Minister by the military bands during Flag Hoisting Ceremony. Then he addresses an inspiring annual speech to the entire country. Different cultural events take place at the Red Fort following the march-past of the Indian Army. Flowers are showered on the flag from a helicopter. In the evening, the Government buildings are lit up.

Various arrangements for this day are done well in advance. Schools and other educational institutions all over the country celebrate this day with great joy, pride, and enthusiasm. The flags are also hoisted in every school where teachers and students come together and celebrate the festival. Later they sing the National Anthem. Cultural programs are conducted on this day. Children come to know about the sacrifices of many freedom fighters for getting independence. At many places, sweets are distributed among the children.

After the day ends, generally we forget the sacrifices of our selfless patriots. Thus, celebrating Independence Day every year helps us to remember them. We get an opportunity to show our respect towards them and pay our homage. We must not forget that just because of their efforts, today we live in a free environment and breathe the air of freedom. We must always remember them and not just on Independence Day. This is the day we feel proud to be Indian.

On 15th August 1947, India got independence. The British rule came to India to an end. Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was sworn as the first Prime Minister of independent India. Since then, 15th August is celebrated as our national festival. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm in every part of the country.

The main ceremony takes place at the Red fort in New Delhi. The Chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air force salute the Prime Minister when he reaches there. Then the Prime Minister hoists our tricolored flag. Twenty-one guns are fired to honor the flag.

In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister narrates various plans about the progress and future of the country. Distinguished people, as well as foreign delegates, are invited on this occasion. After the speech, all the people together say β€œJay Hind” thrice. This and the program concludes.

This day is extremely important for all Indians. It makes us think over our mistakes done in the past and warns us not to repeat them. We must protect the unity and integrity of our country. We should strive hard to make it a progressive country. Only then we will be proud to be Indians.
