Set 1: Essay On My School Library

Like every school, my school, St Michael’s, also has a very big library. It is next door to the principal’s office. So when we children walk down the corridors, we have to be very quiet. At the entrance we have to remove our shoes, as the room must be kept clean and free of dust and dirt.

The library is a very large room and divided into different sections. We, juniors, have a special place where tables and chairs are set in a circle so that the teacher can see and help every child. The space in the middle has low shelves filled with a variety of books. These books are colourful and attractive and the print is large enough for us to read without straining our eyes. There are also children’s magazines and encyclopedias, which the teacher read. At our library we can get a lot of information for our project work in History, Geography and Science.

The junior section of the library is very airy and bright. The walls are beautifully painted with cartoon characters. I just love to spend time in my school library

Library is the heart and soul of an educational institution. Books are the treasure from which as much as is drawn the more the drawer gains and that treasure never gets exhausted. A well equipped library-equipped with the best selected books, magazines and newspapers should form an integral part of the schooling of children. Children need to be told, they need to be encouraged in the use of the library and teachers have constantly to keep a watch on what the child reads, what he learns and how much does he assimilate from these books.

A separate period for every class needs to be provided in the school time table in which children should be required to go to the library, read books and magazines and take down notes of what they read. These notes, thereafter, need to be checked by teachers. This would give to the teachers an idea what the child most prefers to know about and how he reacts to what he reads. It would be an automatic psychological estimation of the child – the way that his personality is moulding; what his interests are and what he plans to become. What he is learning; what he takes interest in, would get reflected in the choice of books or magazines and teachers would get to know the mould and manner of his thinking and working of his mind.

The school library, in order to fulfil its purposefulness should have books for all ages and for all minds and the librarian, incharge of the library should himself or herself be knowledgable as to be able to recommend what books to be chosen on what subject.

Further more, the school library should have a nice, spacious seating arrangement in every way to draw students to it. Students, during assemblies, should be informed about the utility and usefulness of books and need to be told how books could be their best companions. Books could give them what no other companion can give – other companions could quarrel with them; push them and hurt them sometimes; companions can change their attitudes and behaviour but whatever is contained in the books shall ever remain constant and the same for ages after ages. The word once printed in a book shall ever be the same for all times and keep on giving the same message generation after generation.

cooperate and to conjoin efforts gives the mind a training in the art of cooperation, adjustment and accord. That is why they are called ‘Team Games’. Set 8: Essay On My School Library

Ever since I was admitted to this school, I was very keen to see the spacious hall, where only the students of the higher classes were allowed to go during the lunch hour. To others it was something very important, where one could go only with the prior permission of the class-teachers. But I being a student of Class IX did not have to face that difficulty any more.

It was on July 20 that I got a chance of peeping through the glass-panes of the big almirahs. I found out that there were some heavy volumes. It was difficult for me to even move them. Then there were some very small ones also. These were like toys which even my younger brothers and sisters would like to have. Most of the other books were of an average size.

There was an awe-inspiring official who appeared to be very busy. I could read from the name-plate that he was the librarian. He had heaps of books on all sides of his table, and in shelves behind his seat. It seemed as if he was drowned in a sea of books. Here I remembered :

Alone, alone, all all alone,
Alone in a wide, wide sea.

Nearby was the Newspaper Section, where about 20 newspapers of various languages were displayed on stands. There were about 60 magazines also on Sports, Science, Current Affairs, Commerce, Management and Computer Science.

This grand library had a Reference Section for teachers also. I learnt that there were about 6,000 books on various subjects. I was happy that I saw the library that day.
