Gymnastics is physical exercises that develop and show the body’s strength and the ability to move and bend easily. It is often done as sports in a competition. It is the practice of exercise for maintaining good health and strengthening the body. Gymnastics takes its name from the Greek word ‘naked’. The ancient Greeks believed that bodily exercises were of great value in education. They wore no clothes when they took part in athletic competitions.

Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse and performing circus skills. It is very complex sport involving the performance of exercises requiring physical strength, flexibility, control, quickness, synchronization, grace and balance.

Competitive artistic gymnastics is the best known of the gymnastic events. Artistic Gymnastics is usually divided into men and women gymnastics. Men compete in six events namely: Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. On the other hand, women compete in four events namely: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. In some countries, women competed on the rings, high bar and parallel bars.

Other gymnastic disciplines include rhythmic gymnastics, tramplining, team gym, tumbling, aerobic gymnastics and acrobatic gymnastics. Participants can include children as young as twenty months old doing kinder gym and children’s gymnastics, recreational gymnasts of ages five and up, competitive gymnasts at varying levels of skill and world class athletes.

The person can use gymnastics to the best advantage. If the person wants to become strong and active, he must remember that fresh air, wholesome food, regular habits and plenty of sleep are very important. Gymnastics play an important role in helping to bring back the original movement and strength after illness and accidents. In some cases, it is possible to train one muscle to do the work that was done by two muscles before the accident. Injured soldiers, cripples and people recovering from certain problems have often won back much of their former activities and uselessness by the practice of this remedial gymnastics.

General gymnastics enables and women of all ages and abilities to participate in men performance groups of six to more than hundred and fifty athletes. They perform synchronized and choreographed sequences. In 1939, the first largest general gymnastics exhibition was held. In 1984, Gymnastics for All was officially recognized as a Sport Program by International Gymnastic Federation. Later it was recognized by national gymnastic federations worldwide with participants that now number 30 million.
