A Soldier or a Jawan is always smartly dressed. He wears a khaki uniform. On his head he wears a helmet. On his feet he wears heavy leather boots. He carries a heavy rifle or gun.

During peace times he lives in the soldiers’ barracks or quarters. He has to wake up very early in the morning. A bugle is sounded to wake him up. He quickly dresses up and cleans his rifle. Then he goes to the parade ground. The parade goes on for an hour or two. He returns and has his breakfast. He is assigned some duties. He has his lunch and rests. In the evening he plays games. He has to be back in the barracks before the sound of the evening bugle. He leads a life of discipline and hard work. He has always to obey orders.

During times of war, the soldier’s life is harder and full of risks. He lives on the battlefield. He has neither rest nor peace of mind. He has sometimes to go without food and sleep for a number of days. He may not get enough water to bathe or wash himself.

He leads an adventurous life at such times. He shows his daring and courage. He has to face cannon fire, bombs and shells. If he is not killed, he may be maimed or disfigured. Yet he fights very bravely. He makes many sacrifices for the sake of his country. He gives up his home and his family. He gives up all his comforts. He leads a lonely life on the battlefield. Very few appreciate the sacrifices he makes.

The soldier is very important because he defends the freedom and honor of his country both in peace and war. He is ready to make the supreme sacrifice for his country. He is a heroic figure whom we should all should honor.

A soldier is the pride of nation. He defends the honor of his motherland with his life and blood. He has to raise superior to his family and his own self. His profession brings out the best in him-chivalry, discipline, team spirit and loyalty.

His example serves as a beconlight to others who are tame and cowardly. His life is a source of inspiration to the young of the nation. He has no politics’ in his make-up. He serves the ruling government to the best of his ability.

We love the soldier as much as-if not more than-the scholar, the statesmen and poet. The soldier embodies in himself the spirit of youth.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose lives in the memory of Indian youth much more perhaps than Tilak, Gandhi or Tagore. The great and glorious part he played in the I.N.A. movement will be cherished by generations to come.

The Indian soldier in the British days was a hired mercenary. Now he is a national soldier. There is no hard and fast line between the so-called martial and non-martial races in the Indian army today. The Indian soldier has earned a great applause during the last two World Wars from the highest quarters. He is the finest specimen of humanity, be a Maratha, a Sikh or a Rajput. He is the best symbol of the secular character of our country.

The soldiers in free India helps in many civilian jobs as well as locust-fighting, crop-cutting, bridge building, road making etc. He has more opportunities than ever before of mixing with common people.
