On 1st May 1960, after the merging of Marathwada from Hyderabad State and Vidarbha from Central Province, a state called ‘Maharashtra’ came into existence. After Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra is the third biggest state in India. It comprised 357 talukas and 35 districts. Konkan, Pune, Nasik, Aurangabad, Amravati and Nagpur are the six administrative divisions in which Maharashtra state is divided.

Maharashtra is observed as the land of Marathi speaking people. Marathi Marathi language developed in Maharashtra during the period of Yadavs. The residents of Maharashtra are called Maharashtrians. Maharashtra is situated on the West coast of Arabian Sea. Western Ghats, Konkan and the Maharashtra Plateau are the sub-regions of the state. Mumbai is its capital city. Rock cut caves like Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta are at a distance of 400 kilometres from Mumbai. They produce deep influence on people visiting Maharashtra to see its beauty.

Maharashtra is considered as the pioneering state of social reforms in India. The rural society in Maharashtra has been connected to the outer world only due to the spread of modern education, industrialization, urbanization and the increasing influence of the latest technology.

Some of the specialities of Maharashtrian food are puran-poli, batatewade, bhaji, missal, kandepohe, thalipith and sheera. The traditional dress of people is nine-metre sari called nauwari for women and parkar-polke for girls. Traditional men were dhotar-shirts and mundase, pagote or feta on their head. Women in Maharashtra are fond of fresh flowers called veni, which is hanged on hair. Among the ornaments, the most fashionable is the nathani that is worn by women in nose. Both men and women are fond of ornaments. Women use earrings, bangles, armband, rings, necklaces, waistbands and anklets. Men use chains and rings made from precious and semi-precious metals like platinum, gold and silver.

Dance, drama and good music is thoroughly enjoyed by people. Ganesh Chaturthi and Gokul Ashtami are the main festivals celebrated by thousands of people in different parts of the state. People wait year long for the arrival of these festivals. These festivals display the unity of people in the state.

In Maharashtra, agriculture is the backbone of society. The farmers have always played an important role in Maharashtra’s past. People are sports lovers. Wrestling is their favourite sports. Some people earn by performing different attention grabbing performances on roads and fairs. They climb on a wooden pole with different articles and show dangerous acrobatic acts. People of Maharashtra love their land and can even sacrifice their life for the cause of their land.
