Set 1: Essay On United Nations Organisation

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the U.N.O. was formed. The two world wars had given the world a very bitter experience and everyone wanted peace all over the world. The League of Nations could not prevent these wars and hence a necessity of forming a forum with more powers was discussed at a conference in 1941. Finally the delegates of 51 countries assembled in San Francisco on 26th June, 1945 and the United Nations Organisation was born. Today, almost all the countries of the world are its members.

The headquarters of the U.N. is in New York and 24th October is celebrated as the U.N. Day throughout the world. The U.N.O. is a committee of nations. The first committee of the U.N.O. was the Security Council. It had five permanent members – The U.S.A., Russia, the United Kingdom, France and Nationalist China. These countries had a veto power which means even if one country did not agree on a particular issue, it could not be carried through in the Security Council.

The other units of the U.N.O. are the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice and Trusteeship Council. Each member nation is represented in the General Assembly. The Security Council has eleven members of which the five are permanent members and the remaining are elected by the General Assembly by rotation. Another wing is the International Court of Justice. One of the most popular wing of the U.N.O. is U.N.E.S.C.O. (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) which has its headquarters at Paris.

The U.N.O. has prevented major international conflicts. It has done its job well in Indonesia, Korea, China, Suez and in Congo. It has so far prevented the Third World War and that is its major achievement. It has played significant role in the Indo-China war, the Arab-Israel war and the Super Power confrontation in Cuba in 1961.

Besides preventing international conflicts—the latest between India and Pakistan – the U.N.O. has proved beneficial to humanity in general. U.N. agencies such as UNESCO and ILO have contributed a lot in lessening the sufferings of the unprivileged people all over the world. The UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) and U.N. Peace Keeping forces have provided relief to millions of people affected by regional conflicts and wars.

Politics has entered this World Forum also and it has been proposed that the U.N.O. should have its own army and it should be given the legislative powers for the whole world. This dream is yet to be realised. In spite of all its failings, the U.N.O. has done a yeoman service to the humanity.
